Three-part iterative collective installation, ‘Figure 1. Cold Lingering,’ ‘Figure 2. Attuned Breaching,’ and ‘Figure 3. Obtained Dwelling,’ explores relationships between dark and light. Drawing on bare trees wrapped in the winter sun.

Artist Britney Saywell is guiding our perception of an expansive light. Centered around a hearth light, this sculptural installation pushes for an acknowledgment of the dark. Pulling the audience towards the impact light holds over darkness.

Paired with a guitar melody, audio work from each install is made from field recordings collected along the Auckland Eastern Coastline. These works cultivate a dynamic sound space for the physical installation materials to converse.

Supporting artists Makisi Tuiasosopo and Sama Oloapu have each been instructed to visualize and recreate an overcome dark entity from their past. This responsive making extends the push and pull of one’s pursuit of light.
